Modernized FEMA 100-year Floodplain Maps

The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has recently "modernized" the set of maps that outline the location of the 100-year flood plain, and is seeking public comments on the modernized set of maps. There have been some changes to the location of the 100-year floodplain, with some areas being dropped out of the floodplain and others added.

The Inyo County Public Works Department has been designated as the local agency in charge of collecting public comments on the modernized maps and will be holding community meetings in the near future throughout the county. This is your opportunity to view the maps, comment on the basic information and make comments both online and at the community informational meetings. Please click on the "Community Meetings" link below for date, time, and location information. Comments can also be mailed to FEMA comments, c/o Inyo County Public Works Department, P.O. Drawer Q, Independence, CA, 93526.

Although FEMA is seeking public comments on the latest version of its Floodplain Maps, the federal agency is only asking for a very narrow range of comments on specific aspects of the maps. The public has the opportunity to submit comments regarding the basic information. For example, FEMA is accepting comments regarding the street name accuracy; whether the various roads and bridges on the maps still exist or have been moved or altered; whether culverts and similar water-diversion structures have been added or taken out; and whether the new maps correctly reflect the location of existing streams, ditches and canals.

The newly digitized set of floodplain maps for Inyo County can be viewed and any electronic comments submitted by clicking on the "Maps" link below.
